I have a newly acquired Lb1714 that is hard to start (it is cold out today in the mid west). and smokes excessively once running (the smoke amount is not unbearable to move the tractor around the yard, but to increase the RPM enough to run the mower would cause to much smoke to be comfortable). It also has a lot of blow-by.

Additionally, I noticed a lot of fuel or oil leaking from the exhaust manifold and head connection point of the number one cylinder.

It is a bit cold today to do any work, but am wondering what the first step should be and what is the best way to diagnose the potential issue.

I suspect that the number one cylinder may have an issue due to the leakage possible broken or stuck ring.

Also does this engine (I am assuming it is a TD 950) have piston sleeves?

Also, I would like to install a block heater on the engine. Could someone provide the part number for a block heater, maybe HATZ or maybe the diameter of the freeze plug and which plug to locate the heater?

And, when operating the "shuttle shift" on this unit, is the operator required to push in the clutch when moving the lever from forward to reverse or reverse to forward? This tractor requires that step?

compression check. I think you have a ring problem :(

Just noticed there is also oil in the radiator. There is NOT coolant in the oil reservoir.

Should I pull the head first to view it, or check compression first?

Yes,
Your tractor is not a power shift, it is a shuttle shift transmission, it requires using the clutch to foward/reverse or to shift gears/ranges

You must also come to a complete stop before shifting the forward/reverse shuttle.
If this was my machine I would be yanking out that motor and replacing it with a new motor from a LB1914.
The 1714 is really gettting harder and harder to find parts for it.
If you need parts for it. Your best avenue would be Little Tractor and Equipment. in Metropolois Il.
