I am a long time reader of the forums and I am looking at buy a new DK35SE HST with FEL. The question I have is about the lift capacity of the KL351. It is rated at 1412lbs to full height, What would it be at half of full height? Example: unloading a pallet of wood pellets out of a pick-up. I really like the specs (and size) of this tractor other than the lift cap. I know a lot of you will say move up to the 45, but that tractor is to big and $3k more. Thank you for any input you may have.

What does a skid of wood pellets weigh?

A typical pallet of wood pellets is 1 ton (2,000lbs) or fifty 40lb bags plus the weight of the pallet (10-20lbs).

Yes, a pallet is about 2000 lbs.

I too was initially interested in the DK35se as 35hp was fine for my needs. I did want more loader capacity however so went with the 40se which, last year at least, was much less than a $3000 upgrade. The 40se/45se are only very slightly larger than the 35se too.

I don't think anyone is going to be able to reassure you about the ability of the KL351 to lift a ton to half height. Those sorts of numbers are not available from the manufacturer. You are of course correct that the loader could lift more than 1400lbs to that height but it would mean being very close to the limit. You also need to consider that lift figures are quoted at the pivot pins. Lifting a 4x4 pallet of wood means that the midpoint of the load is at least two feet further out than the pivot pins. You could estimate therefore that lift capacity would be down by about 30% at least, maybe more. If I wanted to lift one ton pallets of wood to five feet I would definitely go with the KL401, real forks (not bucket forks) and make sure I had a good amount of ballast on the back of the tractor.

The other option that might allow you to stay on the smaller tractor is a 3ph mounted telescopic fork lift. Though not cheap. .... a skid steer.

Brad no can do...
I did a test for a customer and this is what I came up with...

The 351 loader with standard Kioti quick tach set up
I put a set of Woods pallet forks on 392lbs.
I was able to get 24 60lbs concrete block on a pallet 1,440lbs
So if you do the math the most I could lift was 1,832lbs and I WOULD NOT try and take it off of a truck.

Rick, Thank you, that is what I needed to know.

Brad,
You can get a little more lift out of a Woods loader if your dealer can get the Woods brand.
Or you can spend a little more for the DK40 and that will do it with ease.:)

Using bucket forks my Kubota L39 with slightly turned up hydraulics lifts 1850-1900 lbs. (Ceramic Tile) but I would only want to lift 1500 Lbs full height.

Bottom line, you need at least a KL-401 with pallet, not bucket forks.
