2013 Max 22
I hit a stump and bent the hydraulic filter on my Max22 (NOT E-MAX). I noticed it immediately and shut down but of coarse a bunch of fluid leaked out. Removed the bent filter and found that the filter mounting flange is also bent. Order new filter / mounting flange and an o-ring for the end of the pipe on the mounting flange. My question is: how many quarts of fluid would you add (after all parts are installed) before starting the tractor? Also what position should the attachment be in when checking the fluid? I guess I'm going to have to operate everything up and down to bleed the air out. Any advice?

PS: It's a Hydrostatic drive tractor with a front end loaded and backhoe.

Its a good likelihood that most of your hydraulic fluid drained out. Example - my tractor holds eleven gallons of hydro fluid. I put back ten and then check the dipstick. I continue to add a little - 1/2 quart - at a time until its at the full mark on the dipstick. Start the tractor and let it warm up. Turn it off & let it sit for 10-15 minuets and check and adjust fluid until its at the full mark. I do all this with implements on the ground and I really doubt that there will be air in the hydraulic lines. However - if you do notice "quirky" operation of the FEL or back hoe then working them will bleed the air.

You can also start by only adding half of what's required for a full fill and start checking the dipstick. I have no idea how "high" in the system your filters are and it could be that quite a bit remains. In any case I would not start the tractor until you see fluid on the dipstick.

Since you have no idea how much you lost, fill it until the dip stick shows full. Start it for a few seconds and check dip stick until full. Repeat as needed.

when dip stick level doesn't drop anymore, run the hydraulics thru their extremes and recheck/add.

You could just drain if completely and then add as per the manual what is needed. You would then have all new fluid. I did that on my Yanmar and Mahindra and had no air problems. I broke a connection once on my Yanmar and the fluid was gone in a flash.
