Last year I posted I had a dozen or so tree stumps to pull and it was suggested by several TBN members to hire out someone with a larger tractor. I'm glad I took the advise.

I asked the driver who made a delivery of top soil if he knew of anyone and introduced me to a young man who just bought a JD 110. He went to work the next day and what a machine.

Watching that yellow colored machine pull in a couple minutes what would take me hours was a learning experience. Also learned is what you see on the surface may be more than what you bargained for once you start digging. This kid went to work for two days and I can not believe the hugh rocks below the surface with tied in with the tree trunks. I fiqured if I tried to do this job, my BX would have over 400 hours on it.

The BX did move the hugh trunks to help out once the stumps were out of the hole and the dirt was shaken off with the JD110. The JD110 cost a little under $50K according to the owner. Also the BX was good at filling and pushing dirt back into the holes.

So the $2K was well worth the investment. I think the BX is good if you have a lot of time to slowly pick away at a large project and it can be a productive machine. But, there are times you have to just be smart and not be a hero and kill your machine.

I know what you mean. I recently was offered the chance to buy a 1/2 acre next to me and I think I'm going to. It was cleared years ago short of the really big trees. I was looking at it with a buddy of mine who has a Ford 3930 and he said... "we could do it with your tractor and mine." I declined. I have a guy that will get his dozer out there for $65 and hour with no setup or fuel fees. He will blown through it in no time whereas I would be busting my butt for no telling how long.

DmansPadge & tractorjim,
I applaud both you gentlemen. I believe this is the first time I have ever read on these forums where someone actually used their brains and didn't beat the crap out of their little $15,000 dollar machines to do a job that was meant for a much larger machine. I'm sure your BX's thank you also /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

You didn't see the stumps I paid to have pulled last year. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Here is one of them there were about five total.
