That must have been one heck of an impact to bend the plate like that. Glad you're okay.

Given the cracks, I'd expect that to break apart if you tried to hammer it back into shape even with heat.

I have a few ideas that weren't mentioned I think could work.

1. Maybe if you could heat it and get it under a hydraulic press, it would stay intact. (Everyone has a gigantic press, right??)

2. Cut out the whole damaged section and weld in a new piece of plate.

3. Use a penetrating dye or magnetic particles to determine the extent of the crack and grind them away. Weld up the cracks and grind the whole thing flat. Perform the repair in a heated area. Build up the backside if you think there is not enough meat left.

I am waiting for my torch to arrive so I can work on this. Here is my current plan (once all tools are on hand)


Heat the metal and hammer it back in place. Apply dye for determining the full extent of the cracks, and grind them out. Weld the cracks. Grind the underside smooth, and add another 1/4” plate for extra support. If I add the plate to the bottom, it won’t change the spacing between the blades and the deck. Then I’ll repaint everything and reassemble the puzzle.
