I need some advise on my Bush Hog. Kodiak MD 6 foot. I have an oil leak on the bottom of the gearbox. My dealer says I probably hit barbwire that cut the bottom seal. He ordered me the seal but I cannot get the gearbox off.

I removed the cotter pin and large nut on the bottom. The large disc that the blades attach to will not fall off. I don't see anything else holding it on. Tapping it thru the blade nut access hole did not help. Maybe it is just a tight fit but I am afraid to beat it too much in case I missed something.

Thanks for any advise.

The large disc is the stump jumper, and they are usually welded onto a bar that the shaft runs through (they can be bolted, but that's less common). The shaft is normally tapered, and sometimes splined or keyed as well. You can try soaking it with penetrating oil, then using pry bars (better if you have a helper to pry on the opposite side), or even short 2x4s. If none of that works, you might have to come up with a puller fixture, or use a little heat.

Thanks for the help. I soaked it with Gunk and was able to break it lose.

just some additional info. I stored my brushhog last year on some pallets and it didn't work out as planned. The pallets put unequal pressure on the stump jump and caused the seal to fail over the course of the winter. Anyways, The nut was on there pretty good (book spec'd over 500 ft/lbs) and I got that off easy enough. I tried for quite awhile to bump it off with a sledge hammer down through the top of the deck through a "Vent?" hole and had no success. I ended up making an impromptu puller. What I did was run a short length of chain up past the stump jumper around the blade holder and back down to make a loop and repeated on the other side ending up with a small basket if you will. That basket was just big enough I could take the tire jack out of my truck and run it up against the spindle that the blade holder slide onto. A couple cranks of the jack to apply direct pressure and the whole mess dropped right off onto the ground.

I realize the OP already got his off, but this may help someone else in the future! Congrats by the way.
