Well, I was mowing along great today and suddenly, black smoke and fire pour out of the muffler on the John Deere 216. No compression at all so I pull the head. Turns out, my exhaust valve is bent due to a small screw embedded in the head?!?

I have no idea how the screw got there as it's been over 40 hours on the clock since I last pulled the head. I'm stumped. There are 1450 hours on the engine with no rebuild, so I guess this isn't too unexpected.
My question -- Is it worth fixing? I know these are great engines and can be rebuilt, but it looks like I'll have to do a full rebuild including a new head as the screw is embedded in there to the point where I can't pull it out.
Also, assuming I were to fix it, how much is this going to run me?
Looks like I'll be switching my search for a loader / brush hog CUT and instead looking for a good mower... I get the feeling that even if I were to fix it, I'd probably be looking for a new mower anyway as this one is ~25 years old and pretty tired...
Thanks in advance for any help!
