I have a kohler 18 horse v twin motor that burns excessive oil out of the exhaust. I took apart the head and replaced both head gaskets thinking it was the problem, Cylinders looked clean on both sides. Cleaved the breather intake. New spark-plugs. After all that it seems to burn even more oil,to the point where standing behind the mower is impossible. This is a pre-owned mower/engine. On a side note the engine revs and runs perfect without back firing or missing a skip in timing. I just want to know what other things can be bad on the motor.

Intake valve guides badly worn, stuck oil rings, grass and/or dirt in the cooling fins causing the engine to over heat and collapsing the rings. Broken rings won't always score the cylinder. Ring gaps in alignment. Pressure oiled engine? Could be loose rod bearings. Wrong weight oil. Nondetergent oil will stick rings quicker than a good oil.

What Grade of Oil does the New Holland, Model number CV18S use? I purchased the riding mover used and I'd like to change the oil.

My guess would be worn piston rings.

just went thru our Kohler k301 12 horsepower golfster golf cart engine .

the valve guides were good and i went ahead and ground the seats and valve faces. slight bit of cylinder wear.
The kicker was the rings themselves...
top compression ring end gap- .120 inch
2nd compression ring gap- .225 inch (yeah) that has to be some kind of record

honed cylinder and Installed new standard size rings and ended up with

.030 inch top ring
.033 inch second ring
This is right at the edge of what the recommended gaps are for a new engine- actually the 2nd ring is out by a .003

Put her back together and no smoke at all- and not using oil either
this engine was smoking so bad that it was embarrassing and eating oil like it was free.

if that twin is a valve in block engine like the old k series then my money is on the rings needing attention
