I have this D20 and it is a great machine. trouble is when pushing S-N-O-W the tracks tighten and start popping. When I loosen the valves to let some grease out there is only air escaping. This does loosen the tracks back to proper sag but they will re-tighten if i'm not careful. When I tighten them back in good weather I do use grease gun. I just thought that grease should be escaping when the valve was opened up not air and why would it be building up air pressure when running in the snow?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dozers are not the best for snow it is terrible for tightening tracks my CAT D7 hates it .

Pushing snow with a dozer without "snow shoes" is asking for trouble if you are inexperienced at it. Snow gets compacted into ice on the chains, idlers, rollers, and sprockets. This ice build-up is almost like adding layers of hard facing, and will push your track tensioners to the limit. The popping noise you hear is two things; A piece of ice has been forced to break off and the tensioner has taken up the slack. Kinda like a rock jammed in your sprocket that explodes.
As for air in your tensioners, it was already there. Grease, like oil, will find it's own level. "Snow shoes" have a relief cut-out of the pad so snow doesn't get compacted by the sprocket quite so bad. I have seen chains break because the operator wasn't paying attention, and I'm really glad I'm not a Cat field mechanic anymore.

Thanks for the advice.
What I am seeing is that as the track turns and the leading pad rolls over the rear sprocket and then flattens out the next pads leading edge actually pinches into the trailing edge of that previous pad and then pops under it as it flattens out.
I hope I explained accurately. As the tension is let off of the adjuster then it allows that leading edge to go just under the previous pad.
Having said all that and hoping I'm correct WELL I could just not know what is happening!!!
Thanks
Denny
