Hi,

I just recently bought a 1993 D20A-7E with 2470 hrs on the machine. I知 going thru to some of the maintenances and adjustments that I need. The most recent adjust was the brake clutch, now when I stepped on the clutch, the drive shaft will stop in about 1.5 cycle. Although, after that adjustment, I notice the shifting is a little notchy to engage and more difficult to find gears. I this normal? The guy the sold me the dozer will be sending the manual shortly, I hope..? so I'm still waiting.

Thanks,
:) XR

Sounds like you have it too tight and now when you push the clutch in the inertia break grabs too fast and binds in the gears. When they get stuck in gear pull both steering levers to release this tension instead of forcing it. If they don't line up (the gears) no amount of force will let them engage properly and youwill just bend up the forks or worse. When mis aligned try jerking the blade up and down a bit this will move the driveline too. :) Or let clutch out and push it back in to find the gears. I didn't sell it to you did I? Just playing.

Hi Darin,

So your sayin, by stoping the shaft to fast, it caused the gears to bind and more likely not to lined up due to not havin any freeplay. What if i stepped on the clutch slowly, would this help some freeplay for the gears.

Also, are you also suggesting to move the blade side to side so that the drive train inch up a little.

I'm wondering if there is any adjustment on the Clutch link, i notice there is not much slack on the clutch.

Actually the way they say to operate the d/d machines is to partially push the clutch pedal in and then to the floor applying the brake at the same time. But I actually will just use the clutch becuase the other way is too much moving. :) By moving it slowly will help but I woudl just back off the interia brake to where it stops the driveshaft in 1 sec to 3 sec. The clutch pedal should have I think 3/4"- 1" free play. Talk to you again and sorry for the long delay in my reply.

Actually the blade up and down jars things up. :)

Hi Derin,

Thanks again for the reply, I have very little hope from the previous owner/dealer that they would provide me that Users Manual, any way I felt I squeeze them to get the deal that I want. I致e been using the machine for total of 13 hrs now and boy, amazing what this little dozer can do in a short period of time. Every now and then, it will be difficult to find gears, but what the manual recommend using the break followed by the clutch work most of the time. Its seems that the pressure to the gears are less and you get a smoother transition shifting, but every now and then, I need to repeat it several times, its OK if you are not in a ravin. The slow clutching also work, but I run out of patient and need to run the machine faster?.otherwise I知 getting the hang of it.

On the back right side of the machine, I see a Glass peep hole, also if I open the door panel in that same location, I see another fluid cap that is pressurized, what are these two?

I知 thinking of replacing the trany fluid, I feel guilty after several times I致e grinded the gears. May be a good Synthetic could help eased the grinding pain. I would also need to adjust the clutch free play, I知 pretty sure there is no slack on the linkage, I値l let you know if that helps further on the gear trany shifting.

Thanks again :) ,

That glass is actually your hydraulic fluid and the radiator cap looking pressurised is where you add the fluid if low. I would think synthetic woudl help for sure.

yeah this units actually push reall good for there size and hp no doubt about it. I have 17 here in my lot right now. :)
