When do you check the oil in it? I was flipping the blades on mine last night and decided to check the bar oil. It looked low, but how long does one allow for the oil to drip down? SAE 90 oil isn't exactly going to just fall to the bottom. I guess I should have stored it in the up position so I could check this morning.

I guess I can go cut some with it to warm the oil and then check it.

Advice?

I usally run it for 10 min, then flip it up & check it. By the time I get off the tractor & get the tools for the plug I figure it drained down enough.

I left it up over night. I am going to check it before I cut tonight.

Thanks,

The oil will come down quite a bit faster than one would think, as long as the weather is warm. I generally just stand it up and check it a couple of minutes later. I check my mine every day before we start cutting.

Mine ended up being 1.5 quarts low. I don't see any leaks, so who knows if it was ever filled correctly. I just got done cutting 100 acres. I figure over the winter I will clean things up. Change all 3 gearboxes oil, put new blades on it, touch up the paint, etc.

Thanks,
D.

It seems to be the nature of them to vent off a little oil. Mine uses about a 1/2 pint a day. Very hot temps or very dull blades increases oil use. One of my mowers had a bad bar vent and went from the 1/2 pint to using a quart a day. After it warmed up you could actually see 90W oil dripping out of the vent on the end of the bar. The dealer sent a new vent under warranty and since then no other problems.
We have finished hay up all the hay we are going to do. I have the same plan as you over the winter all fluids will get changed, new blades, and a very good check over.

The manual says check the oil every 100 hours of use. That does not seem often enough to me.

Also, it says change it every 350 hectares which equates to 864 acres. That seems reasonable I guess.

Where is that vent located? I will check mine also.

Also, have you seen any loss of oil in the other 2 boxes?

The vent is recessed on the very end of the cutter bar. I have never seen any loss of oil from the other boxes yet. My dealer advises checking the cutter bar daily and the others by the book.

I will look for the vent.

What oil are you running in your mower?
