Kubota 1140 CPX RTV
I got a 2011 Kubota 1140 CPX from the dealership with about 400 hours on it. All the paper work was good, servicing up to date, and everything checked out when I left. Over the last 3 months though, I'm noticing that there is a distinct rattle/knocking noise coming from the floorboard or maybe even the front end. You can feel something knocking through your toes it's that distinct. Not very loud, just very obvious. This only occurs in 2 WD and in Medium and High. When I put it in 4 WD, all is well with the world, no matter how fast or slow I go.

As opposed to driving an hour to haul this thing back to the dealership to have them take a look at it, I was going to try and figure out the problem and get my mechanic friend to apply the fix.

Any ideas as to what this is? I find it hard to believe that I managed to ding this thing up with 40 more additional hours of basic farm riding.

On a side note, if this is relevant, I did notice another weird problem. When there is more than one person in the RTV, it squeals at 23 MPH. When I'm alone, everything is fine...no noise.

Thanks much

These are known to have a rubber type bushing in the suspension A arms that allow movement.

Jack the front end up and try moving the suspension arms forward and backward to see it that produces a clunk.

Do the same at the rear.

Also look for shiny area where it is hitting or rubbing that show on one side and not the other.

On the squeal, I would look for something rubbing when you have extra weight on the machine. Tire rubbing against fender or frame or a stick jammed in somewhere that rubs when enough weight is on board.

Oh yes, check that fan belt or look for anything around the fans just to be sure it's not something there.

Good Luck.

Thank you very much for the insight. We are taking a look at it this week.

Thanks again

Spudhauler,

I thought the new models are the ones with the movement in them? Didn't know the older RTV's had the movement also.

Your are right 628. I saw the X and was thinking a 2014 machine. Boy was I asleep on this one.

Would still look to suspension components for the squeal, but perhaps to the drive shafts and universals for the rattle.

The universal between the engine and the front differential is know to be loose and have a rattle.

Sorry about that.

It was the front joint boot. It had a lot of play and rattled when moved around by hand. The back one was not as bad but it needs replacing too. When jacked up, you could spin the tire slowly and hear it clicking.

90 bucks each. Hard to believe that went out so fast...450 hours. We have an older 2009 or 2010 model with 1000 hours and it's had hardly nothing go wrong to date.

Thanks for this thread. Maybe it'll help someone out in the future also.

I know this is a very old thread but after what i found out yesterday from the dealership, I wanted to update this one and my original thread.

That 1140 cpx with 450 hours now has 790 hours and after still noticing the rattle / bumping along with the intermittent squeal at 23 MPH from the rear wheels, it boiled down to 2 major problems that exceed $2,000 in repairs: needs all new u-joints (or is that cv joints?)...total of 4 and the rear-drive shaft is shot and needs replacing. Those 2 alone are the bulk of the problems that all started with a rattling / clunking noise in drive shaft (2wd only) and a squeal / rattle at 23 MPH to 25 MPH.

This was a problem at 400 hours when we got it and when it was looked at, 'all was within spec'. The rattling / clunking got worse, the squealing got more consistent, and i finally just made a list, audio, and video of the issue. Now it's trade-in time for a new one. This one must have been a lemon.

Advice: any knock or rattle or squeal...have them look at it and don't take 'it's in spec' for an answer until it's completely resolved then (not later).
