kubota 3 cyl diesel fuel shut off valve smokes please help

the fuel shut off solenoid on my 3 cylinder diesel kubota will not work in run position. engine starts then dies. when checking found solenoid very hot and smoking. installed new solenoid and that one smoked to. this engine is in an exmark lazer zero turn mower. checked safety switches some are bypassed and others seem to be working fine. if anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.thanks for your time.

Most Solenoids have a pull winding and a hold, the PULL draws a lot of amps and is designed to pull, then it switch's to the HOLD, the hold, draws very little amps by only holding the linkage. Possible it is running with the Pull winding energized. Another thing to check is make sure the linkage is allowing the plunger on the solenoid to retract fully, if the linkage is not adjusted to let the solenoid plunger fully retract that will cause it to heat up very quickly(basically it's operating on the HOLD winding if it's not fully retracted).

What engine model is it? It will either have a 2 wire or 3 wire connector, the 2 wire will energize for a few seconds and pull in to SHUT engine OFF and then release with an external mounted coil. The three wire will have either a pull and hold coils or I may have seen some with run and stop coils and it is mounted on the block.

it has three wires one from starter one to ground and one that pulls solenoid in run position. put another new motor on and smoked in three days any ideas would be greatly appreciated.thanks.

I would find/beg/borrow/steal a wiring diagram for your machine and then check the wiring. And key switch. Chances are that the pull winding is receiving +12v in the key run position, which will kill the solenoid. It's not designed to be in the "pull" for more than a few seconds. That is what the "hold" winding is for. I am not sure how replacing the starter would help, but I have not seen how it is wired on your Exmark.

starter feeds one of the three wires to solenoid it is attached at starter solonoid other wire is ground and last wire is hold signal.thanks for your time.havent had a chance to check or replace starter yet but cant think of any where else i would get so moch current from.

Hi All,
I have an Exmark XS as well that is having the same issue.
The engine starts up - the fuel solenoid pulls but doesn't hold after 2-3 seconds.
I have the 3 wire version of the fuel solenoid and have checked all of my contacts.
Any help on how you resolved your same issue would be greatly appreciated!
