b7100
HI folks, I just bought my first tractor for our 5 acres.. A b7100 4wd It has seen a LOT of neglect.. It came with a box blade and bushhog though for 400 bucks. So anyway IT didnt have a starter and the rubber boot was gone off the shifter, the panel is rigged here ans there and the attachment pin for the hitch ia bent BAD. Also (of course) the steering is stripped in the box and muffler rusted off.. oh yeah and tires.. completely shot.. BUT, i rolled it down a slope after i drug it off the trailer , popped the clutch and low and behold she fires right up like a champ.. I put it in reverse and it went in but had a grinding even with the clutch disengaged but once i left off the clutch it backed right up the hill.. so i look forward to some good discussion and insight as i try to polish the little jewel up this winter. My questions now are 1. Why would it grind with the clutch in and it actually in the gear? 2. When i buy a new boot for the shifter, is it under pressure? I may be missing a part or 2 under it. Shifter seems to operate fine but i see trans fluid sloshing down in the hole.. thanks.in advance

1: Grinding may be clutch throwout bearing
2: Yeow. Hopefully you didn't get too much rain water in there! Otherwise, IDK.

Yeah it was actually stored in a barn and the fluid looks good. Not milky or anything.. I also suspected the throw out. Should i spray some penetrating oil or something in through the holes there by the clutch to see if itll loosen up before i pull it apart?

The steering box may be a little hard to find.

ebay is full of steering box repair options. I've not seen complete boxes , but I've not looked for them.... All aftermarket of course.

Sounds like a frozen up throw out bearing, I think it needs to be replaced, not sprayed and if you keep using in the way it is, you will be buying a pressure plate too.

Yeah guess ill bite the bullet over the winter and split it.. clutch isnt engaging at all now so.. i expected some work on a 400 dollar tractor.. furthermore spoke to soon on transmission. I unscrewed the cap beside the shifter and thick gray dope was forcing its way out...

That sounds awesome, but i have so many things to fix on it that may have to wait until the next time it strips out lol.
