That is my procedure as well, I even go as far as removing the cover over the rotator and clean the snow out from there too.

I have a sand driveway and found after a few years that the plastic ring bearing gets rather worn and that causes some gear mesh problems. A new plastic ring was a few bucks and helped my chute rotate better. I also run my chute from stop to stop before shutting down.
