Kubota Clutch Plate Spline stripped

Moving up a slight grade with my L3130DT the machine suddenly stopped with inability to get any gear to engage. Kubota dealership in Port Huron MI found that the clutch plate female spline was almost smooth and I agreed when viewing the removed part. The tractor has just under 2000 hours and 17 years under only my ownership. Have I precipitated this problem through some particularly bad operating technique or is this normal wear for 2000 hours? Tractor normally only used for grass cutting (6' Befco finish) in summer; wood hauling in the Autumn; snow plowing in Winter (7' back blade).

Was there what I call "rust powder"? The reddish dust that is the splines turning to powder?

That is not normal, threes a reason for this to happen and your dealer should be able to find it pretty easily. The clutch disc could have seized to the flywheel or something like that.

I had this happen on a Kubota B6200 when it was about 30 years old. It showed 800 hours but there's no thousands digit so that could have been 1800, 2800 et cetera. I was pulling a landscape rake up a steep gravel driveway with six or eight inches of gravel piled up in it, but the engine was doing fine and it was a steady pull, so I think it was just ready to go.

Had the dealer come take it away for repair. The bill was, I think, around $200 for parts and $600 for labor. When I went in to pay, they said something was wrong with the way the shop had documented the job, so they could only charge me the $200 parts. I said I wasn't trying to get the labor for free, but the guy said "They didn't write it up right, so they don't get paid!"
