Hello I have a kubota d1005e diesel. It is blowing lots of black smoke at most rpms I have changed the air filters to no avail. The intake doesn't seem restricted. It does seem to be using a lot of fuel. Does anyone have experience with a similar issue? My next guess is restricted muffler, bad injectors or injection pump. The engine starts easy and seems to run great but with somewhat low power and the black smoke issue.
Any ideas would help.

What does this Engine power? A tractor? skid steer, something else? Give us some more information.. age..hours..etc. An older high hour machine will have a wider list of possibles, while something younger is more apt to be a component.. say you have a sticking injector,,lots of smoke and high fuel usage.. but usually just one cylinder.. if it has glow plugs you can pull them and find out if one is got a lot of build up.

Let us know what you find, or give us more info so one our many diesel guys might be able to help.

sorry for the lack of info. It is in a 2003 bobcat 463 skid steer only has about 700hrs. Starts very easily usually without needing the glow plugs. After the last fuel tank fillup it seems like I used about 5 gallons of diesel in less than 3 hrs run time. The smoke is so bad that the entire right rear side of the machine near the exhaust outlet is black. I have noticed that the exhaust sounds a little weird, almost like a turbo even though the engine is non turbo. Is there a way to check exhaust pressure? also how do I check compression through the injector holes or glow plugs?

I'd be pulling the injectors!!!!!! At least one is leaking.

Are the injectors serviceable or do I just replace? I cracked one at a time this morning and each definitely made a difference when cracked while running. When you say that one is leaking does that mean that it is not sealing in between pulses? This is my first kubota engine, what is a good online parts supplier?

The first thing I'd want to know is what cylinder. Pulling the glow plugs should answer that.. If one is carboned up or very wet (it'll look different than the others)..that's your cylinder. (disclaimer: you may have something else wrong than a injector..but it sounds like a bad one) Don't worry about compression testing yet..When/if it's time, you'll need a diesel compression tester and you can test it at the glow plug hole. It'll be time for compression test if all cylinders look the same, or if you have a tester handy.

Usually the injectors can be either rebuilt, replaced with a rebuilt, or replaced with a new. Find out which cylinder has the problem, then make calls or find a dealer on line..
Your local Bob Cat dealer can help with a part number. If you get an injector, buy o'rings/seals/gaskets for anything you have to remove. Nothing like finding an seal problem needing parts when you should be reassembling.

Thanks,
very helpful. I will be testing things out hopefully later this weekend, the weather is too nice right now to be turning wrenches.

I have an old JD diesel that started to smoke black smoke. I changed both fuel filters and the smoke went away. Hope it's that simple for your situation. Good luck.

Go back to the fuel, change the filters as well and see if it doesn't clear up!
