Hello,
Have a Kubota FEL LA681 curl cylinder leaking. I've never worked on a cylinder, after I remove the cylinder from loader how do I disasemble it and replace the parts? Called local dealer no kit in stock to order is $43 seems high for what I guess is O rings? Is this my only option? Advice appreciated.
Thanks
DJ

Welcome to TBN DJ:D

In addition to O-rings, there are also packing's in there on the piston.
There are many different ways to disassemble one depending on how it's put together so a picture of yours would really help...

Some use snap rings, some have a threaded cap, some have a wire retainer that's accessed from a hole in the side.

For $43 you are better off taking it to a shop to get rebuilt. I charge $65 +parts for a cylinder that size, so total would be about $80 and you get a one year warranty. Some people like to do it themselves and that's a good thing. If you want help, take pictures, get a parts breakdown and we can walk you right through it.
$43 isn't a bad price from a dealer. Be thankful you don't have a Kioti.
Andy

* Also, unless it's rather new, rebuild the pair. Otherwise you have one healthy cylinder and one worn so the rebuilt one will do most of the work and cause it to fail prematurely.

I am a relative newcomer to tractors and hydraulics, so I'm still learning the language. I posted a few days ago about the failure of the curl function on my Kubota LA403 FEL. As I have looked for a solution to my situation, I have read often about the "curl cylinder", but in reality, isn't there just one cylinder that performs both curl and dump? OK, two cylinders, one on each boom, but each cylilnder is dual function, right? Move the control lever one way, the cylinder extends and the bucket dumps, move the lever the other direction, the cylinder retracts and the bucket curls. The cylinder has two hose connections, one at each end. My understanding is that the piston inside simply moves back and forth, depending on which side sees pressure.

I've never been aware of an FEL bucket that actually has separate curl and dump cylinders.

Yes, the curl/dump cylinders are the same one (or two in parallel) -they are DA (dual acting) cylinders

I have it off the tractor but I need a pin spanner wrench of some sort. It has two holes 180 degrees apart about 1/8 or 3/16 in diameter. Where can I purchase this tool and what is a proper name?
Thanks for the info

Try Goggling "pin wrench" or "pin spanner". HERE is one I found. You can also use a pipe wrench if there is enough should to grab onto.

More often than not they are too tight for a spanner wrench so you end up using a pipe wrench or a hammer and chisel anyway. I wouldn't bother buying special stuff for how often you plan on doing this. But, tools are always nice to have.

Kennyd that is not what I needed. The nut(?) on the bottom is about 1/4" with the holes on the sides. Parts came in today and I tried to remove with pipe wrench not much to bite and didn't want to bugger it so I took it to the shop. They said probally about 1 hr each @ $68, I'm doing both. I'd still like to find the tool. I do my own work can't afford to have it done but need to grade road after our floods so went ahead this time. Thanks for you guys assistance.:D
