If I recall, the G1700 is the same as the G1800 that I have, just a slightly smaller engine.

The belt is a PITA to replace. You need to remove the drive shaft that goes back to the HST, is it goes from the crankshaft back to the HST (through the pulley that the fan belt goes around).

well- not too bad. Remove mower deck,jack up, lie under from rhs,12mm spanner remove three bolts from lower pulley which separates drive, slip in belt, loosen alternator 12mm. PRZE IN BELT WITH SCREWDRIVER, APPLY TENSION TO ALTERNATOR AND RETIGHTEN Refit deck after greasing whilst off -tighten up 1/2 hour
Dont wash hands in kitchen sink as wife get agressive!-Chris
