Anyone had any experience converting the stock generator system of a Kubota G5200? I would like to convert to a 40+ Amp alternator. Is their an inexpensive automotive alternator that will directly bolt into the existing mounting brackets? Will the existing pulley RPMs of the Kubota be sufficient?

Any input is much appreciated.

Don..
As you no doubt know you have an AC dynamo on that tractor. You will need to abandon the wiring and add some new to make the conversion you are looking to do.
With some alternator you may need to change the mounting bracket but it can be done if you are handy at wiring/fabricating.
The alternator you need is an internal regulator type, an economical and readily available is a 14231, this is from late 70's early 80's Nissan PU and a lot of others. should be less than $50 at most parts stores... KennyV

I just went ahead and bought the kit from Kubota for my BX2230. I think it was about $160. I probably could have done it cheaper, but it was so easy with the kit that I couldn't resist. Came with the appropriate mounting bracket and "Plug-n-play" wiring harness. No fuss, took like 20 minutes to install. And, I didn't have to worry about frying the electrical system because I hooked something up incorrectly..... always a possibility for me! :D

Thanks. I assume the alternator P/N 14231 is a Nippon Denso or similar Jap/Korean. I will take the existing dynamo with me to get a proper mechanical mounting fit. The machanical mounting is my worry. I have no problem with the electrical changes...I'm an old avionics tech and aviation A&P. I want to get the closest 40A alternator that will fit the existing mounting with the least hassle. Did you have to change the drive belt to a different width or length?

Is their a Kubota P/N on the kit or maybe just the P/N of the alternator? This could be a good alternate if I can't scrounge an inexpensive generic one. I just need to get the proper mechanical fit...I'm not worried about hooking it up electrically.

Don,
The part number mentioned is a 14231 Hitachi Alternator. I think it is actually rated at 35 amps. It was installed on Datsun autos and trucks from about 1978 thru the early 80's.

I've considered making this modification myself, just haven't had the time yet.

When doing the conversion do not forget to remove the old dynamo regulator, add a lead to go for the field, and a sense with fuse and then battery lead also sometimes depends on the alternator. The biggest thing I think is making the bracket everything else is not too bad. With the BX2230 kits you used same belt, just changed the swept sector bracket and a pivot bolt with proper spacers too bring pulley in line with belt.

Thanks. I noticed your callsign...I'm N5DM. As far as the alternator mod, yes I will remove the regulator and wire the alternator B+ to the battery. I think altenators generally have a two contact connector...the "I" contact goes to the "on" position of the ignition switch...the other I'm not sure. Any input?

Do you think the BX2230 alternator kit will drop-in install on the G5200?
