Kubota knocking

Have a BX2230 with about 300hrs. Started making a knocking sound at a certain RPM. Sounds like it's coming from injection pump. Any suggestions?

refer to the first question them-

1. Have you checked the lubrication oil level in the injection pump?


2. Have a credible diesel shop come by and properly adjust the fuel delivery settings in the injection pump and pay them for an hours labor.

May want to check for a bad injector. They will sometimes sounds like a bad engine knock.

Minor thing but the indirect injection diesels
have injection nozzles not injectors.

The nozzles could be worn from the diesel fuels
friction effect from pumping though.

Minor thing, but Kubota's don't have injection pump oil reservoirs and there is little external adjustment.

The only external adjustments are the idle stop and full throttle stop, and then an adjustment for the rack travel at full throttle these rarely ever need to be touched.

Run the tractor to the RPM where you hear the knock, open the injector lines at the injector nozzle. When you get to the cylinder where the problem is the noise will go away. Tighten the line back up, many times this will make the noise go away, if it doesn't, remove that nozzle and have it tested. If the nozzle tests okay I would then have the pump tested and then lastly check for internal engine damage.

The older Kubota motors injection pumps had lube oil reservoirs.

I have never seen an indirect injection diesel fuel pump that did not have an oil reservoir for lubrication of the injection system.


The fuel delivery screw settings are sealed with a wire and lead seal.

If he has air in the fuel delivery line the motor would barely run.

If he has a cracked heat shield all the better as he can remove it and repair it (I just hope the bolts cooperate) be sure to use new bolts and Blue Loctite at least.

I have the same tractor, and noticed a 'knocking' or 'banging' noise, only at certain RPMs at about 500 hrs. It sounded almost like a hammer on metal. The tractor ran great though. Did some looking, and finally found the culprit. The heavy metal guard over the exhaust manifold had cracked at the front of the engine, where it bends at a 90 degree angle. At certain RPMs it goes into resonance and slaps against itself,and/or the manifold itself. One of these days I'll likely have it welded, but for now I just ignore it, and if it gets annoying, I change the engine speed!

Talked to a diesel mechanic who told me with new regulations, low sulfur (low lubrication).in fuel was causing a lot of this. He said to use Stanadyne fuel additive for low sulfur fuels. Said he runs it in all his diesels (tractors and trucks) Drop in 4oz and all is good!
