Kubota L 3010 sight glass fluid check

I have been searching to find out the proper way to check the fluid using the sight glass on this tractor and haven't come up with a solid answer. Some say it should be running, some say lift the buckets or or lower decks down, stand on your head and scratch your elbows.

With the tractor setting level not running there is no fluid in the sight glass. If you peak in the fill hole the gears look dry. With it running it looks like the sight glass is full. My thinking is that some one has filled it with it running. My question is should it be running or not when checking the fluid back there. Im not wanting to drain it to measure it at this point, just make sure its properly filled.

Most sight glass are check with machine off and attachments at zero energy state.
Sight glasses get a lot of splash during operation making reading accurately impossible.

I always checked my L3410 cold and off. It's good practice to relieve pressure on hydraulic cylinders when shutting down, but I don't think it affects the sump level. My sight glass developed a leak after about 10 years, and after replacing it (simple) it was much easier to see the level.

Thanks for your feedback. This tractor was serviced about a year ago at a Kubota dealer. A steering line had busted and it was towed there for the repairs. I haven't seen anywhere that it could have leaked out so Im guessing that they just didnt fill it back up or filled it like you would a cars transmision. It just had me baffled that an authorized dealer would not know how to fill a tractor that they sell.
