I have a B Series 2920 and it works very well for my needs and have a freind who blew the engine in a larger JD and he is asking me some questions I can't answear. He has been using mine this spring with his implements and feels the power is fine but wants a tractor that sets higher, main reason is while pulling brush hog it wants to high center in some spots. He is looking to buy and wants to eliminate an older zero turn that is in constant need of repair and has strong engine but the rest is falling apart...a grasshopper maybe with a 18hp diesil.

Anyway the biggest question is....Is there any L Series that have a MMM or belly mower option? And other than cutting around trees does a rear finish have any other downsides. My reading suggest that rear finish mowers make for a nicer cut of the lawn.

Appreciate your thoughts.

I have an L2800 and do not think there is a belly mower option available as there is no mid PTO available. I have a 60" Bush Hog RDTH finish mower and lots of trees which are no problem to me. Cuts great. On the down side if your place is wet the finish mower is heavy and you will need to wait for things to dry out.

The small Grand L series such as L3130, L3430, L3240, L3540, L3940 and some others have the option of the center PTO and a 72 inch belly mower. You have to look at the tire and loader options to make everything fit. Have a 60inch Land Pride rear discharge 3 point mount mower and it cuts thick grass fast but the turns and the short fruit trees kill my mowing speed. If I had the hydro I could cut the shifting time down and speed up easier in the long stretches but still have to back under the trees to cut under them. For me the BX is quicker with the trees and turns.

I had a B7800 for 3 years, traded it for a L3240HST last year with Barlows and couple days ago traded the L3240 (35 hrs) back to Barlows for a new B3200. They may still have the L3240HST for sale if that's what he wants. I have a 6' RFM and really like it. It does make you pretty long with FEL on which I never take off. I never had trouble with it due to trees but my trees are not real close together to restrict manuvering. It cuts good and easy to disconnect and to service. It's a Landpride and really heavy so it swung my B7800 a bit on downhill turns but was no problem. Haven't tried it yet on new B3200. It didn't swing the L. My first RFM was a light mower and kept falling apart but my yard is not golf course smooth and definately not level. If your going to give it rugged service don't get the cheaper light weight one.

1*I have another question is your tractor insured when he's using it?

No tractor isn't even insured when I work with it, nor is my wife's engagement ring insured for that matter....I don't believe in insurance except for catastrophic circumstances. I have $10k deductable on my business and $5k on my house and it also covers my boats and $1k on my cars. I don't like things that prey on our fears. I haven't had an insurance claim in 18 years.

I traded my B2710 in on a new GL3240 - 514 loader and 72" mmm and my primary function is to mow my lawn. I like all the features of the new L series. I mowed the lawn today with no problems and the tractor is not to heavy for the mowing function. I also use the tractor to maintain a 400' drive, tilling the garden, loader work, etc. The GL series is a great tractor.

Good luck!

David, Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for....I didn't realize L40 was a series in the L lineup...thought it was a model. The L3240 is what my freind should be considering. Helps alot when you walk into dealer and have the selection narrowed down and are familar with the features.

How about a B3030 with the 72" MMM?

That is what I have, and I am very happy with it. It is a decent amount larger than the 2920 but not too huge, and the weight is such that it doesnt tear the yard up with the mower.
