so yesterday i was driving up the road was gonna be turning off the road onto a muddy road put it in low gear [with a load on] and popped it in 4 wheel drive and i hear a weird sound ok popped it back out it went out but when i rest my hand on the lever i can feel it jumping up and down and it makes a weird sound on the road in 2 wheel drive now but i put the bucket on the ground and drove forward and 4 wheel drive is coming on and off. any ideas? do i just drive or take apart? [sorry im asking so much on the site and not saying much im a motorcycle tech and know nothing about tractors so i dont have much to post that would be useful to anyone]

There is a propeller shaft that comes from transmission to front axle. 2 couplings held with roll pins keep in alignment lift front axle and rotate wheel while watching the shaft if moving and the short shaft from transmission is moving trouble in tranmission if not check where seperated. if roll pin is broken and coupling slides off the shaft would look for front end wear at pivot pin.
I broke 4 propeller shafts before learning of the checking for wear of front drive housing.

Failed to mention there is a protective tube covering the propeller shaft. it is a slip tube held in olace by a screw remove then take a cold chisle or screw driver and slide tube from transmission housing. then do the suggested checks.

I feel that you didn't get the four wheel drive engaged properly and might have a lever problem or a gear problem.

a friend of mine said its safe to just pop it into and out of well your moving as long as the front and rear wheels are moving at the same speed and you are in low gear so i did and it didnt grind it just didnt do it normally

Glad that is all the problem. I had assumed that you had retried to engage the 4Wd level and still had the problem.
The reason I focused on the propeller shaft had one last less than a hour before breaking.or threads incoupling sheering off. Then a total bebuild of front end when the pinion gear shed its teeth. The housing boss holding the front in alignment was worn replacement required. This will take the smile off George on the dollar bill.
