When adding ballast weight to 3 point do you go by the lower link end max lifting capacity witch my manual states 1985 lbs. I have the LA 524 fel with ssqa bucket and want to add around 800 lbs on the 3 point. Just want to make sure I'm going by the right #'s on the three point.

Mine wears a rear mower in the warm weather and a scraper blade (this year a blower) so the 3P hitch is never empty. That's plenty of ballast for me. It would be silly for me to have a separate ballast box and remove a useful tool to use it. It isn't in the picture but the ballast for this was my rear finish mower.

700-800 lbs of something on the 3pt. Is about right for your machine. Or in the form of a rotary cutter or box blade you can get by with a bit less as it sticks out further behind. The advantage of the box is it snags on less as it is close in, and offers storage of tools.

IMHO unless your going to cobble one up yourself I would rather spend bucks on an attachment that I can use if needed.

I have filled rear tires and I use my 550 lbs 6' box blade for ballast. I have found my loader max one time only on a huge rock and could only lift it about a foot, then it wouldn't lift anymore. My filled tires and box blade was sufficient for that weight. I was a little light in the rear with that load, but not that I couldn't still easily drive the rock 120' to where I wanted to put it.

Exactly, we use ours for woods work. Its tall and just as wide as the lift arms and doubles as a chainsaw holder and chain holder etc..

I use a 600 box blade or 5' rotary cutter on my L3200.

Before I loaded the rear tires I tried to pick up half a pallet of bricks with the box blade on the back... Was a little scary turning the steering wheel & having the back tires slide a foot or so to the side rather than the front turn. Pulled a few bricks off & was able to barely lift the pallet.

Loaded rears are a requirement on this tractor now in my book. No problems at all now even with moderate lifts & no 3pt ballast the couple times I have done it. 3pt ballast pulls weight off the weaker front axle (think teeter totter)where ballasted rears just keeps the rears on the ground. So you should always use 3pt ballast even with ballasted tires.
