I've been brush hogging some heavy stuff and in the past two months, I've knocked off the fuel filter housing and needed to replace. Both times, I was able to shove a stick into the hose to keep the fuel from falling onto the ground until I could get back to get my fuel can, and then let the diesel run into it. My question is this...does the L3800 HST have a fuel cock valve anywhere? I followed the line up the fuel tank and I can't find one anywhere. Any info is greatly appreciated.

From what I understand it does not have one. If the fuel level in the tank is below the return hose, (below 1/2 full) it is not supposed to run out of the filter assembly. I believe the owners manual suggests changing the fuel filter when the tank is less than 1/2 full.

IMPORTANT
• When the fuel filter bowl has been removed, fuel stops
flowing from the fuel tank. If the fuel tank is almost full,
however, the fuel will flow back from the fuel return pipe to
the fuel filter. Before checking, make sure the fuel tank is
less than half-full.

However you mentioned having the fuel filter assembly completely knocked off. So in that case I suppose without the filters assembly there at all, it may still run out of the main fuel hose.

Thanks guys for your responses. Wondering, how hard would it be to put in a fuel cock valve in the fuel line? In the event of knocking it off again, I could simply turn to the 'off' position instead of stuffing it with a stick.

I saw the guards and hopeful my son will be able to weld something that I can attach to protect the filter.

Again...thanks!

I had the same thing happen to me, busted fuel filter cup, while bush hogging just this last Thursday. I also wondered why there was not a shutoff valve. Yes, if you take the cup completely off with less than 1/2 a tank full of fuel, then it stops the flow of fuel, but I had almost a full tank and had to wait until it was down below 1/2 tank.

I added a valve in the line on my BX, sure makes changing filters easier. Plus it is very obscure so makes a good thief proofing element. They will never drive it away if the valve is off.
