Today, I discovered that the battery on my L3940 is drained. Workers used the tractor and left the key on where over several weeks the battery drained. When I discovered it today, I attempted to jump start it with my Ford Ranger (V6, 12V) but it would turn over only a few cranks and then slowly wound down. I then hooked up a battery charger/starter, but was not able to get it started this way either. The tractor is about 3.5 years old. Any suggestions.

Thank you,

Rick:)

How long did you leave the charger on and did it indicate it was charging? Usually there is a little analog gauge on the chargers to show how many amps it is charging

Hi..I took the battery out of the tractor and place it on my Schumacher charger. Voltage shows 13.4 and 64% charged.

Thanks,

Rick.

Clean terminals and hook the battery back up..........

When my tractor batteries get near end of life, I frequently hook them up to a charger. As long as they are showing full voltage, they will kick the tractor over......... Until they wont.

Once the amperage capacity drops below a certain level, the battery is done... period, end of story. I can usually get an additional season out of a battery keeping it on a trickle charger when I am not using the tractor, but that is about it.......

As you know engine start batteries are designed for very short duration high current loads. NOT for multiple complete discharges down to completely discharged like a trolling motor battery is designed for. You can of course try to charge up the battery, but it will never have the capacity it once had even if you do get it up enough to crank the engine.

I'm curious, when you leave the key on on a 3940 does the hour meter keep on counting hours or not?
