Kubota L4200 GST Transmission Fluid Leak

I have a late 90's Kubota L4200 Glideshift 4 wd tractor. I warmed it up today and moved it out of the barn and a few hundred yards up to the house and then I noticed that I had transmission fluid dripping out of the tube that houses the propeller shaft that runs under the oil pan and between the rear of the engine block and to the back of the front axle. This tube is in two sections and transmission fluid is emptying itself out of the joint in this cover tube which is pretty much half the way down the oil pan.


How is transmission fluid getting into this area. It has been leaking out for over an hour now. I don't think this is good !

It is leaking out of the the seal for the front drive shaft following the shaft through the cover out to the lowest point

Yes good thinking. I have the shop manual and removal of the front prop shaft and cover tube seems pretty straight forward. I haven't found the section that discusses replacement of this oil seal. Have you replaced that seal before?


I have never seen a seal fail like that before but my experience is mostly on motorbikes and cars.

Service Information:

We have received reports of transmission oil seepage into the clutch housing past the front axle propeller shaft seals (Item #f). This is caused by the sleeve (Item #d) moving out off position and causing the seals (Item #f) to leak.
To alleviate this problem, Kubota has designed a spacer (Item #1) that will prevent the sleeve
(Item #d) from moving out off its position.

Note: All tractors built after the S/N indicated above have the new spacer already factory installed.

Yes I bought the kit and fitted it. It worked fine. The local dealership wanted to change the oil seal as well. That is expensive to do as the machine needs to be split in half. If you can do the job yourself then have a go. Do not mess with the recessed oil seal and buy yourself a decent roll pin drift set.

Thank you for the response. I received the new shaft (TA040-1420) and two O rings Yesterday . I'll need to find why the manual (TA040-98010) was not mailed. I hope this works because the last shop in WV I talked to charged $8500 to replace the seals.

I was told the manual is no longer available. Do you remember if the manual suggested anything out of the ordinary or even better if you had a copy. Thank you very much for all your help
