I assumed all kubota engine oil was now compatible with all their machines. Yesterday I stopped by and picked up a jug of kubota 10-30 which they recommend but when I went to use it I noticed it was not cj-4 rated which my l5460 needs.

I called them and it looks like the dusty old jug they dug out was the last of the old stock. All their newer jugs are marked cj-4, ci-4 etc.

Just a heads up for anyone with an l60 series if you buy kubota engine oil make sure it is a newer jug...for anyone else probably the old stuff is at least as good.

Better yet if you have an older Kubota hurry up and buy the old stock of CJ-4 so you can keep the extended change intervals.

noticed the other day that all the stuff at my local dealer was CJ. Was hoping to pick up some CI before they ran out, but didnt get there in time.
Im down to 5 gallon buckets of CI now, ive already used up all my CI 1 gallon containers.

I was at one of our local discount stores a few months back and they had some straight viscosity Delo oil with a CI rating, did not know if it was old stock or Chevron was still making it as we have a lot of older logging/farm equipment in the area that needs it.

my current alternative when I exhaust my CI stock is to use the CJ and add a small can of Caterpillar Camshaft and Lifter Follower Lubricant at each OCI. Will give my CJ oil a nice dose of zinc and phosphorus.

Are you sure it was diesel oil?

My tractor has to meet the CJ-4 spec also. I stocked up on the Valvoline at Napa when it was $10 a gallon.

Hi Roger - if that was a question for me, yes, the ones I posted about are diesel oils.

As the OP began with, you have to be careful about dumping older certified oils into the new complex diesels.

Probably should be in another thread to keep these topics separated, but some guys want the older certified oils for older (2007 and minus) diesels.

I was talking to the OP.

Wouldn't CJ exceed the spec for CI and CF or whatever the older diesels take?

The Valvoline premium blue meets them all.

Gotcha.

Some guys are concerned about what has been taken out of the newer C_ diesel oils, esp. the ones that are dual (S_) rated. Some people are not happy about things like ZDDP being reduced/eliminated, and add it back to newer class oils if they can't access the old stuff - like PoorMansCat.

In theory, the newer certs should be backwards compatible. The catch is who loses if your old engine dies a premature death ? EPA - nope, Tractor Manuf - nope, State tax dept - nope, etc....... just the guy who is now minus an old engine.

Lots of debate in the oil forums like BITOG.... the new oil is not quite a bad as I originally thought, but the debates rage on, and the cost of betting wrong is non-trivial, at least to my bank account.

I don't remember the problem levels, but there is such a thing as too much ZDDP - you have to watch how much you are adding, if you are doing it manually.
