Kubota L4240
The operator's manual for my L4240 (actually the manual covers all models from L3240 through L5740) calls for a straight 10W, 20W or 30W or a multiweight 10W-30 or 10W-40; CD CE or CF classification.

Yet, when I walk into my Kubota dealer's shop, he carries and wants to sell me a Kubota-branded 15W-40.

I use Chevron Delo 15W-40 in my Dodge Cummins pickups all the time. I'm sure Chevron Delo 15W-40 would be good for my Kubota.

What's up with the oils called for in the operator's manual vs what the dealer carries and sells?

What's up? Simply stated, I think Kubota is behind on updating their manuals. The CD, CE, and CF ratings are all pretty old ones. I used the Chevron Delo 15W-40 in both of my Kubotas.

Here we go again. Don't forget the the new Chevron Delo LE (low emissions) oil is formulated for ULSD (15 PPM sulfur). If you are funning off-road diesel in can be LSD (500 PPM sulfur or higher). Regardless of what some people say there is more of a differance than just the dye.

My M4800 owners manual states that when running oils such as Delo, Rotella, etc... and off-road diesel to shorten oil change intervals. The detergent package in the new oil is not set up for high amounts of sulfur.

I had my off road diesel fuel tank refilled yesterday. The invoice read:
"Fuel Oil, 3, Combustible Liquid NA1993, PG 111, Ultra Low Sulphur Dyed Diesel. Dyed diesel fuel, nontaxable use only, penalty for taxable use. Meets EPA Requirements for Sulphur/Cetane/Aromatic Content."

It's the same fuel that's at the on highway truck pump except the red dye has been added. If you are wondering, it cost $3.80/gallon.

All the off-road pumps around here say "High Sulfur Diesel" not for use in model 2007 and later vehicles. I would just make sure which fuel I was using before using an oil designed for ULSD in my tractor.

For what it's worth I was talking to my parts person at Kubota re:eek:il and got a lot of good info. They said to go with Kubota 15W40 because of the additive package Kubota adds to their oil. I asked about synthetic and Rotella 'truck' oil and was told that each oil is blended and additive is added for that use. Car oil is designed for engines that use about half of their rated hp, Truck about 75% and that tractors use 100%. The Kubota oil is not really any more money and it would be pretty hard for Kubota to say it was a oil related problem if using their oil.

I just did the 50 hour service on my B7800 yesterday and asked my dealer what oil to use. He of course suggested Kubota oil but added use a high quality detergent oil and stick with it. Meaning if you like Mobile or Cheveron stay with that brand.

I have always used Valvoline premium conventional 10W-30.

Kubota oil is hard to find in these parts, I was told to use Rotella diesel oil. Doubt you will have any problems with any good oil brand, 99% of us just don't push the machines that hard and most homeowners that plunk down serious cash for our toys are way ahead of the factory suggested maintenance times!!! :D
