Hi I have recently bought a 2009 kubota rtv 900 the engine runs fine and it's seems lively, but when you put it in any gear and rev it seems to have very little power and is very slow tops 15mph, it still stops dead virtually when you take your foot of the throttle, the hydrolic oil looks like new and is up to the levels, do you know what the problem is? Iv read about swash plates, how bigger job are they to replace? Thanks james

Don't know about the lack of power your talking about but if your basing that on speed then the RTVs aren't fast, never have been and probably never will be. One of the best features of the Kubota RTV is that it stops dead when you let off the throttle pedal. It's supposed to. If it pulls in low to 7 mph with you in it and then you fill the bed with gravel and another 300lb person and it still pulls to 7 mph then you have power, you just don't have speed which isn't a part of the RTVs.

Also the RTV isn't like other ATV/ UTV machines. Balls to the wall isn't necessarily the fastest way to accelerate or expecially when more power is needed for instance when climbing a hill, backing off the throttle to about 1/4-1/2 throttle will give you more power but less speed. This is the same with all hydrostatic drives but with the RTV the throttle and HST pedal is the same pedal. ON a tractor you have separate throttle and HST controls. With a tractor you pretty much set the throttle at a set RPM and then vary the speed with the HST pedal, so if you need more power, you let up on the pedal and go slower but have more power. With the RTV you just have to back off the throttle to gain a lower transmission range via the HST and more power but less speed.

High range wont accelerate very fast in a top shape RTV and top speed on level ground is about 22-25 MPH. Medium range will get you 15-20MPH with plenty of power to climb the steepest hills (if you back off the throttle a bit). I run mine in M range most of the time.

A servo adjustment could help your machine feel much more responsive, I don't have pics of a 900's servo but I'm sure a search or two on the forum would likely locate one for you. Basically what you'll be doing is allowing your transmission to "downshift" more easily. There's no harm in the adjustment and if you go to far one way the machine won't move and you'll know you went too far.....the other way and it will not rev more freely and you know to go the other way. I've heard rumors of a properly adjusted 900 chirping tires but haven't seen it in person.

Hi thanks for the replies, I know they aren't speedy machines, we have a older 06 one and that's fine but our new 09 one that we have just bought has hardly any power seems it can hardly move l have checked the brakes it rolls ok, from researching I think it must have worn swash plates, how bigger job are they to replace? And is there any threads showing how its done? Thanks james

Perhaps these will help. Doesn't look like too big a job. Easy for me to say eh!

RTV1100 but the 900 version would much the same. Everything is under that one cover.

Hi thanks for your replies iv took it apart and the 3 swash plates do have very slight scooring but only very slight you can hardly feel the scoors with you finger, would that be enough fto cause the massive power loss?, also the was some very fine metal filings in the oil, thanks james

According to this page, you need to replace the parts.

I'm assuming any scratches would hamper the smooth engagement of this unit and ruin how the transmission reacts.

Possibly sticking and not allowing it to shift to high, the possible cause of your troubles.
