We have two 2010-2011 RTV900-G9s that have held up remarkably well for the past decade considering undergrad and grad students have used and abused them while doing wildlife research. In the last year, both of them have started having the snap ring on the rear wheel prop shaft begin breaking, causing the seal to leak, and sometimes chewing up the bearing if the grad student doesn't notice it in time. Seems to happen every 6 months to a year. Again, it's happened on two different machines, both of which have never had that problem in the previous 10 years.
The only thing that has really changed is that we're now on a sandy ranch with tons of shin oak (1 - 3 ft tall oak shrubs). But I'm not finding sand or sticks inside the seal when I tear it apart. I would seem to me that it would take quite a bit of lateral force (like sliding sideways down a slope or something) to do this, but I don't have evidence of that happening.
Anyone experienced this before, or have some ideas on what is causing it?
