Deere 2305
I recently picked up a 42" Kubota tiller. Nice shape, paint not even worn off the tines.

It came off a tractor that was setup for cat 0. I changed out the hitch pins so I could use the cat 1 hitch on my JD 2305 (TSC was out of the cat 0 to 1 bushings that day). THe only problem remaining is that the PTO shaft that it came with is too short for my machine (and it doesn't have a guard). I would prefer to get a new PTO, but herein lies the rub; it's a shear pin setup and the shaft on the tiller is only 1". All I have been able to find is 1 3/8. I would also like to have a slip clutch setup (I'm a little parenoid since the dealer's rental tiller destroyed my gearbox :( ).

ANy advice on the best course of action here? Should I just by the 1 3/8 shaft and get a machine shop to make me a bushing, or can I source a shaft that will fit the 1" tiller shaft? Is there an option I've completely missed?

Thanks for any advice.

What model is it? The Pto is not that much trouble or expensive to have a new shaft made. To add the slip clutch might be a problem....

Hi Art,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Model is: B-422

Why do you think a slip clutch would be an issue? I guess there might be a clearance issue there.... Not a lot of room before the gearbox. My biggest concern is protecting my tractor in the event I hit something.

How would I go about having a shaft made? Is this an odd size that I haven't been able to easily locate one off the shelf?

Thanks,

Bob

So.. how many hash marks did that rental tiller have on it's shear bolt head??

Never looked. I was in too much shock while I watched the fluid run out of the gearbox.

To add insult to injury it took them a month to fix it because they couldn't figure out which parts to order (too new they claimed, Deere didn't have the parts in the system yet). It works great now & it was on thier dime, but it still wasn't pleasant.

You can see why protecting that gearbox is high on my list....

Anyhow, can I just have the current shaft lengthened, or should I start over.

Bob, we rarely use the factory shafts for replacement do to cost. It is quite easy to find a shaft that has the 540 end on it to match the tractor but the end on the tiller is often harder to match but if the yoke there is good you could just replace the one that comes with the premade shafts with cover and it would be the cheapest alternative.

I question the slip clutch as some units are tight to the tractor and it would increase the angle of the u-joints while lifting and lowering.

Art,

That's a good idea. How hard is it to get the yoke off the old PTO? I've never done one before. Are the yokes interchangable from one PTO to another? The kid at TSC said it needed to be pressed out, but I ddin't get the impression he was really sure.

After looking at the tiller, I doubt a slip clutch would clear the sheet metal anyhow. It's not a real big tiller.

Your shaft probably is 1 1/8". You can find adapters that will get you from 1 1/8" to the more common 1 3/8" that you find on most pto drive shafts.

I had a similar problem adapting a used Yanmar RS-1200 tiller to my Kubota B7510HST. The pto shaft that came with the tiller was shot so I bought a new shaft at Tractor Supply. Fortunately the tiller came with a 1 3/8" 6-spline male shaft on its gearbox. However, that tiller does not have shear pins so I had to buy a slip clutch. And to get the slip clutch to fit the tiller without rubbing on the tiller's sheet metal, I had to get an extender that spaced the slip clutch 6" farther away from the tiller.

To get all that drive train stuff to fit on the B7510 I had to remove the 26" long lower lift arms that come with the 7510 and use the 35" arms from my MF-135 tractor.

The photos show the resulting configuration.

Any idea where I could find that adaptor? Nothing at the usual suspects (TSC, Farm & Fleet) and nothing online so far. The shaft is smooth with a hole for the shear pin. Your probably right about the size, it was dark when I went outside and measured it.

Maybe I can actually get this this going and get my garden in!

There's one on eBay that might work.

eBay: PTO ADAPTER EXTENDER 1 1/8" to 1 3/8" (item 300122963550 end time Jun-26-07 18:24:46 PDT)

Sweets Tractors also has an adapter you might be able to use.

The Ford 8N website also has an adapter.

Just google on " pto 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 adapter" to get more suppliers.
