I picked up a used Kubota powered generator. I believe it is rated at 21kW. It has just 530 hours on it. It will be used as a whole house backup generator.

It was originally sold my EcoTrans as a Locomotive Auxiliary Power Unit. Basically the main Locomotive engine would power down, and this guy would keep the coolant and oil of the main engine warm and also provide electrical power for the locomotive while the main engine was shut down. It consumes much less fuel and pollutes a lot less than idling the main engine.

Anyway, I got all the EcoTrans stuff stripped off, including the secondary water pump that was running off the side PTO that these engines have. My question is, does anyone know where I can find a side cover to put over the side PTO opening?

Here are some pics of what this guy looks like at the moment:

And here's the side PTO:

Here's the secondary water pump before I removed it. I suppose I could leave it on, but I don't want to be pulling it and am afraid it will eventually seize up from running dry all the time.

I suppose I can remove that aluminum adapter plate and take it somewhere to have a plate welded on it, but I figured there would would be a standard Kubota cover plate that goes there when the side PTO is not used, but I have so far come up empty trying to locate a part number. Here's the engine label:

I'll also need to fab up some brackets to mount the radiator in front of the engine, and of course get a fan. Also need to fab up bracket for the intake filter can. It came with a big Donaldson unit.

Here' a front shot:

Here's where I envision the radiator being located, except a little higher and further out:

Anyone else been down this road before that have some words of wisdom to share, or at least a good place to look up parts for the specific engine with the side PTO?

The closest I have come to finding the PTO cover part number is the following parts manual:

http://products.jacobsen.com/img/manuals/4133109.pdf?m=1297349390

But I don't see the part number in there.

EDIT: Wait, I think it might be part number 4134255 in section 11.1 in the above manual, but Google returns no hits except for the link to the parts manual above.

Interesting project. I think you are overthinking the PTO cover. Grab a piece of 1/8-3/16" alum flat stock wide enough to cover it. Get it close in size roughly, hold it up and trace the backside with a marker or something. Cut close to the line with a metal blade in a jigsaw, then sand/grind/file to fit. Maybe drill the 2 holes first for the bolts to make it easier to line up. Doesn't need to be precise. If you want to paint to match, go for it. If you need a gasket, either use RTV or get some gasket paper from a parts store and cut your own. It will take an hour or two, depending on what you have for tools. If you want to locate the holes precisely, find a bolt of the same thread, cut the head off, and sharpen to a point. Thread it in by hand and use it as a dowel center to mark the part. I think that is overkill as you can easily drill an oversize hole that won't hurt anything.

Or even just leave the plate square as it won't hurt anything. Then just drill the 2 holes and deburr the edges and corners.

Why doesn't it have a rad and fan? How did they cool it in the train?

The pto your referring to is std. It usually powers a hyd pump in tractors. I've seen 2 types of block offs used, either an expansion plug or a flat plate bolted on, nothing fancy. I would remove the adaptor just to eliminate another possible leak point.

I hear ya, but I'm sort of a perfectionist. :) So I'm going to explore getting the OEM cover first. But if that fails, I'll go down the road you suggest.

Here's what this crazy contraption looked like originally:

So what tractor(s) used the V2003 engine (turbo or not, I think the PTO cover shield would be the same.) I plan to call Messick's in the morning to see if they can get me the cover.

Pretty much any v series and I believe the d series also might fit.
Most likely candidates would be things like skid steers or comercial mowers. Might check jacobson sites, can order a lot of kubota engine parts if you know the model mower.

Messicks is a good bet to help you.

Spoke to Messicks who told me they really only deal with tractor part numbers and suggested that I contact Engine Distributors out of NJ. Called them and provided the engine model, serial and code no, and they were able to look up the parts and order them for me. The real part # for the PTO cover is 1522516214 and cost $36.33 and a new gasket was $1.68. I also ordered a few other misc items like oil plugs and a few clamps and bolts. So I'll be able to everything back to original condition.

Glad you were able to find what you needed, I have 4 kubota diesels at the house that are blocked off, some use a expansion type plug and some use a plate, sounds like yours is a plate.

I'd take a picture but I'm out of town at the moment.
