Buying Advice Kubota with R4 vs R1 tires

   / Kubota with R4 vs R1 tires #11
I have a lot of mesquite and have a 52hp Kubota with stock R4s that are loaded.

Have run over some mesquite and haven't had a problem yet.

I rented a 45hp trencher with r1s and had a flat by the time I returned it.

I agree R1 with foam work great. R4 are worthless in mud and doing things like disking plowing pulling trailers in soft ground. If you have animals you and have barns to clean you would not want r4.

I wouldn't say R4s are useless for disking and plowing, just not as effective as an R1. By design, R4s slip more. I have R4's on the my 7040 and 2920. I'm satisfied with their performance. The 7040 4x4 pulls a 3x14 plow well through the toughest of prairie/quack grass with minimal slippage. The R4s don't fit the furrow well vs an R1. Also, it pulls a 6' drawbar disc harrow with max angle and heavily weighted with little slippage.

Not any one style tire will be best suited for every task. That is why one can order any style tire that they want/need.

For puncture resistance, I don't think an R4 can be beat.

R1s are designed for traction in dirt & mud period.

R4s are a compromise between durability, carrying capacity & traction.

I went with R4s on my 32hp L3200 & have been happy. They chew up the field a bit less. They do suck a little in the sloppy mud, but aren't horrible. In dirt I usually run out of power before traction (only after filling the rears with bio ballast).

Agree R4 are far from useless in mud, my brother pulled his 4WD truck out of the mud a few days ago with my L5740 R4 tires, yes R1s are better, but don't totally discount R4, we have a mix of tractors with R4s and R1s and yes R4 are less prone to flats in our experience. When replacing the 6 ply factory tires, I go with 8 or 10 ply, works even better.

Foam helps a lot with punctures. I like my r4s, but I'm guessing foamed Ag tires will fit your needs best.
