This is a three point woodsplitter I've had for a few years. Found it in a used implement (READ:junk) yard in western Montana. It really works, and it is only slightly more dangerous than tormenting a rattlesnake with a short stick. I think it was probobly made in the late 70's, and I recall you could buy a similar item that replaced the rear wheel on a car. They work fine until the screw binds up and the wood escapes the bar. Then it becomes a PTO speed log. I would imagine it would make the car jump off its jack and go limping down the road with a demonic lurch. Worth seeing if it was someone elses car.

treebone, when you type your message, be sure you have a check mark in the box below that says "I want to preview my post and/or attach a file." After you've typed your message, click on "Continue" then click on "Browse" above the "Continue" button, find the file you want to use and open it. Then continue.

preview post box is checked, but I am not getting a Browse option. Maybe this thing is low on hydraulic fluid???

I think I recall something about unregistered users not being able to post pics.

I finally figured it out, but had to re-register under an assumed name. anyway here is the picture of the splitter, note the unpainted bar which replaces the original, somewhat lighter guage steel. It had been beaten into submission.

For several decades I lived in South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin where wood is often the fuel of choice--especially during the spring and fall when you want to remove the chill from the room but don't need to run either the furnace or the air conditioner. I've seen this wood splitter a number of times in operation and IT'S A DEATH TRAP!! Not only does it fling a piece of wood around in an unpredictible way, it can catch a loose sleeve, fringe of a scarf, pants leg, gloove finger, etc. and remove a limb (person, not tree) in the tiniest fraction of a second. I have seen these things come up in farm auctions a number of times and people usually buy them for the PTO shaft and the bearing and discard that god-awful screw device. Please don't use it!!

Glenn, you are absolutely right. I am pretty quick and very wary of this, but I dont care to push my luck anymore. It would be safer taking up a job relighting dud firecrackers.
I am going to hang it on the shop wall as a curio or loan it to enemies. I think it is an interesting addition to the many uses that tractors can serve.
