Hi,
I currently have a BX1860 with a RCK-54 deck and was considering moving up to a newer/larger BX and deck or maybe even going to one of the ZD machines.

Trying to get an idea how folks like the ZD's and how they compare to the BX. I figure quality of cut will be near the same, but have some concerns about turns (hear z machines skin the yard pretty good). How are they on hills and such?

Thanks

Ha! It just sounds to me like you need to buy a new tractor whether you need one or not. A larger BX has a max size of 60" in a mower, not much bigger than you have already. How much property do you need to mow? Do you have other uses for a tractor as opposed to a mower only? I can't help with an opinion on a Z machine, but they are strictly mowing machines. We will all be glad to offer an opinion if we know your circumstances better. There's a lot of experience on this forum and that experience will be freely offered so you can make an informed decision. Personally, when I bought my BX25 I told the dealer it would be used for 80% mowing. It took over 1 1/2 years for me to put on the mower because I used the loader, 3 point hitch, and backhoe so much. I only finally put the mower on because my primary mower a 1977 JD 210 garden tractor engine blew. I don't miss it.

Typically ztr aren't really good on hills, especially when damp or wet. It can actually be dangerous. As for skids, I have rarely had a problem unless I'm in a low area which is soft and wet, just slow down a little for corners. Ztr is by far faster than the tractor. I now mow about 7 acres and probably cuts my losing time in half using my ztr.
Personally, I'd keep the tractor and just add a ztr to your collection of tools(toys). ;)

This is the right answer. Also a consideration is how often you mow. Zs are for people that mow often to do a good job but your BX can mow decent job if your like me and put mowing off until it gets pretty high. Hills mean different things to different people. In Ky we have hills they you lean to walk up them and use ropes for safety. BX will climb them but no 2wd Z will.
