Tractor
John Deer 2950
Have a JD 2950 4x4, older model.
After 2+ hrs run time, losing power/RPMs. Not sure if running hot, oil is black, unusual for this tractor. Any help appreciated.

Engine oil will usually turn black even after an oil CHANGE on a diesel.
Why don't u know if its hot?? It's not safe to remove the cap when hot, so don't do THAT.. Best to get a temp gun.. borrow one from your local tool rental place/parts store that loans tools..
How many rpm's are we talkin about?? 100-200 or 1000-2000??
When was the last fuel filter change??
how about draining a little fuel from the bottom of the tank to check the condition??
How about removing the line AT the tank & back blowing air into the tank to clear any crud?? REMOVE/Loosen the cap FIRST.. you don't wanna blow up your fuel tank..

Thanks for advice. Normally operate under work load at 1750 to 1800 rpms.
Will drop down to barely pull itself.
Don't think Temp. Guage works correctly.
Fuel filter changed last year.
Appreciate any further advice!

Check the fuel.. u need to replace a fuel filter 2x a year.. especially if it sits.. I don't care what your "book" says..
a couple of 20.'s a year & u can solve about 80% of all the problems on this SITE..

Frequency of changing fuel filter is directly proportional to how clean one keeps the fuel going into each tractor's fuel tank! I haven't changed the fuel filter on any of my 3 tractors in the last three(3) yrs and they all were utilized day before yesterday in my hay baling operation. I change my fuel filters by number of hrs operated similar to oil changes not days or months of the year.
