L 3400 glow plugs

I知 trying to understand the operation of the glow plugs on my L 3400. I believe them to be working but it seems like the light is only on when the key is in the start position. It always starts up but Hass to crank for 20 or 30 seconds first. Most glow plug systems have a way to preheat before you try to start to save cranking time but I can稚 figure out how to make mine do this. Can anybody explain?

On my 3400 turn the key opposite of start heats the plugs, I count to 5 or 8 depending on how cold it is.

I thought this but there痴 no light on the dash when I do it. Only when it痴 cranking over. Is it working and there痴 no light or is it possible I have a bad switch?

I preheat (turn switch to the left) twice for 5 seconds each time and the tractor starts up in less than 5-6 seconds. 20 or 30 seconds is too long for your tractor to start. I don't know why your light on the dash doesn't light up but *maybe* the glow plugs might still be working.

The owner's manual should give you suggested glow plug times for various ambient temperatures. Turn the key to the left (accessory position on older cars) for the prescribed number of seconds. At the end of that time turn the key to the start position. The engine should start easily. As far as the lights go, usually when the switch is placed in the start position all other electrical devices are bypassed allowing maximum power to the starter.

My L2800 little cousin to your L3400 I turn key right than left and when fuel needle reach full mark its start everytime.

Just to add, I also give it a little fuel. I move the throttle lever to the 3 o'clock position (maybe a hair less) before even cranking it. Anyone else do this or is this not a good practice?
