I was running a L120 today when the mower deck quit spinning. made a slight rattling noise ( like there was something caught between the blade & the housing ) just before it quit. jacked it up nothing jammed in there & blades spin freely. BUT here's the kicker. while driving it back to the shed i stopped & leaned over & while doing so my butt came off the seat for a second. the engine safety kicked in & the engine started to die but at the same time the mower started to spin. sat down & engine started running but the mower quit. raised up & sat down several times with the same results. any ideas as to where to start looking??

Does your L120 have a mechanical or electric PTO? I think it is mechanical with a lever. My guess is the engine slowing caused the PTO pulley to sieze a little. I'd try sitting in the seat normally and turn the key switch off/on a few times to see if I could duplicate the problem. You probably have an idler pulley (engagement idler) a tiny bit out of adjustment on the PTO or it could be going out and causing the belt to bind and grab.
get a wiring diagram and circuit tester and continuity tester check connector on wiring harness of electric pto clutch on engine crankshaft should have power to it if you have switch on pto engaged and seat saftey switch bypassed(put wire between two prongs coming from wiring harness effectively hot wiring system this seat switch could be bad if it is replace it. it is needed to keep you and others safe) good luck you'll need it from what i've heard about reliability of the new 100 series line of jd
i think it has an electric pto since the mower engages via a switch on the dash. the only lever raises & lowers the blade.

i'm thinking wiring too. i've not heard much positive feedback on this model either. fortunately it's not mine. i have an older case 446 & a couple older walk behind gravelys.

Yes, electric PTO. I had some brain gas and thought about the LA120 which is mechanical PTO. Your L120 is electric.
I would turn off the PTO and then just raise myself off the seat a bit without leaning to see if it happens every time. You might also depress the brake and see if the PTO engages when you lift out of the seat when the engine does not die. Perhaps there's a sneak path through the electrical system that engages the PTO clutch or maybe it's supposed to do that to help shut the engine down more quickly if you are falling out of the seat. That's sorta wacky though.:confused2: I'm still thinking about that noise you heard and thinking maybe that your PTO clutch's wire harness may be damaged. Like they say in the Mazda commercial, "Somethin's up!"

i've tried a few scenarios. break set mower off- raise up-engine runs. brake set mower on-mower won't run-raise up mower runs until engines dies or i sit down.
brake off-mower off-raise up-engine dies. it seems to be doing everything normal except for the mower running when i come off the seat. before this started the mower would run in reverse without holding the over-ride button.
so maybe the owner has meesed around with the wiring. i found a wiring diagram. i'm going to check connections & if nothing obvious turns up i'll call the mower's owner. i'll let you know if i find anything.

i also posted on my tractor.com. a fellow over there nailed it. there are 2 black wires & i yellow attached to the plug at the pto switch. one of the black wires broke off. reattached it & it's now running fine. thanks to everyone for the help. i hope i can return the favor some day.
