Howdy,

Its been a bout 30-40 days since I had started my JD riding mower and I cannot get it to go.
Before I resorted to posting on here, I tried several things but no luck yet. I replaced the filter. took off the Black part that slipts the line into 2 it seemed to be flowing through that fine. I replaced the spark plugs.

I was reading another post here and the guy was talking about losening the gas cap so I went and tried it. I thought it was working as the motor wanted to start,,,,but then I had realized it was trying to start off the fumes as I had left the hose coming out of the black pump going into the Carb? Im thinking that the carburator must be blocked?Because the gas was coming out of the pump fine, there was a considerable pool of gas on the ground and the engine was actually kickin from the fumes? please pardon the messy type as I am in a big hurry...if you all can decipher my writing and have any ideas as to what may be the problem please let me know

I can't speak to that mower, but mine (also a Briggs engine) has a solinoid on the bottom of the carb that shuts the fuel off when you turn the key off. I think it is suposed to keep it from backfiring. That soliniod can go bad or get stuck and not let the engine have fuel. Try tapping on it (see the wires going to it) with a screwdriver handle or something. Don't get carried away.

I would attempt removing your air filter and cover and pouring a small amount of gas or spraying a quick shot of carb cleaner directly onto the intake as you attempt start it. If the mower starts and runs for a second, then dies I would say you have carb issues. If you have good flow to the carb then either your fuel shutoff solenoid is stuck, the float in the carburetor bowl is stuck or you have a totally plugged jet.

Also, since its been a month or more since starting it, varnish deposits more than likely built up in your carb causing any one of ethe above problems.

I agree with the above posts, check the electric connections to the solenoid operated gas valve on the bottom of the carb too. Mine was loose enough it was intermittent and about drove me crazy for a couple of weeks.

As mentioned above squirting a small amount of fuel in the carb while cranking would indicate whether you have a fuel or electrical problem. I would try this first to determine where the problem is. If it tries to start then you know you have a fuel problem. I would then check the voltage to the solenoid to see if you have power to it next. If you have power to the solenoid then turning the key on and off you should be able to hear a faint click from it. At this point if it doesn't work I would pull and clean the carb and check into failure of the solenoid valve.

FWIW, I got mine running and added a small electric fuel pump and eliminated the use of the Kohler fuel pump. Now I can turn the key to on and wait about 3 seconds before cranking, then bump the starter and it fires up every time.

I thank yall for the pointers, I am about to tear into it and see ..BTW, it is a Kohler? an earler response acted as if it was a Briggs,,,Would this make a difference?

Ok,
I poured gas into the carb and like yall said it started and ran until it was dry again. I guess I will have to take off the base around the carb? I attached some pics.

now ,,the hood,, is it just mainly held on by the springs? meaning that if I disconnect the springs the hood connections can just be pulled apart to take off.??

Nevermind,,,It turns out >>>After I removed the cover under the air filter,, there it sat!! With a little red wire coming out the bottom.. I gave it a couple taps with my screwdriver and WhA-LA..it started.. Somthing does bother me though? I was on the phone with a JD house and they said there was not indivisual parts available for the carburator..They acted like I was crazy asking about a "Fuel Silinoid" ? Makes me wonder if I will have to replace the whole unit once it finally gives out completely??

Well, now that I have it fixed and I am ready to go.....IT RAINING!!! I went ahead and did a couple laps regardless:D LOL... At least I'll be ready when it dries up..

Thanks again All.

Good Day

You can definitely replace the fuel solenoid on that engine. I cant remember how hard it is remove that one but I remember when I used to be a consumer equipment tech I had to shave my wrench down thinner with grinder to get between the fuel bowl and solenoid. If you give me the serial number of your unit I can price you a new one. :D

Someone else on TBN suggested installing a manual fuel cut off in the fuel line on all small engines. For one thing, you can shut the valve off and run the fuel out of the carb for storage.
