l1500 reverse

Hi all, my 1500 has been jumping out of reverse. i read a post about it maybe the reverse idler gear. when i removed the shifter plate and drained some fluid i could see the gear is almost gone. My question is : to remove the shaft that the gear is on do i break the tractor at the trans bell housing or at the rear end housing, or do i have to break both and put the gearbox on a bench?
Does any one know if the 175's gear is the same?
Can anyone send me a diagram of those gears so i know what to order?

There is a plate(2 bolts,10 mm socket) inside clutch housing that holds reverse idler shaft in trans.There are 2 ways to access it.Either split tractor where housing bolts to engine or you can remove small tin cover on rt side of bellhousing.Removing this cover will give access to the plate holding the shaft in place.Its a tight place to work but can be done if your hands aren't too big.A lot quicker than splitting tractor.After removing top cover with shift levers and forks,remove plate and slide shaft forward enough to remove old gear and install new one,working from top.Replacing top cover is easier if you have help to line up the shifter forks.Take your time and don't get frustrated.It's tedious but not complicated at all. It is the same as L175.Good Luck

thanks for the info Tommyb, I split the tractor at the rear and saw those bolts and retaining plate in the front, i put the back together and now have the front split. I got the gear pulled last night and now am looking around for a new one. a few places ive called have asked for part numbers. there is not a number on the gear itself and i dont have a detailed paper on it yet.
I got some garlock material from work today so ill be making some gaskets tonight. im trying not to get frustrated yet, its going better than planned.
