My trusty old L175 tranny decided it no longer likes reverse. Talked to the local dealer- sounds like the gear selector is gone. Anyone have any ideas how difficult this is to replace? I assume it means splitting the tractor ( sounds like a lot of no fun already ), but I wonder if this is something worth trying. they quoted me " $660 to $800 if we can get the part...) They have similar tractor for sale- about $1800.00. I have front mount blower and curtis cab on mine. What to do????

On my L345DT (very similar tranny) there was a steel top cover held on with a few bolts. Once that's removed, the shifter parts are all accessible - including the little iron fork for reverse that often breaks. I believe you can replace it without any major disassembly of any kind - no splitting the tractor, no trading the tractor in for another one, no buying that repair guy a new boat. Just maybe $20 for the new part. On mine, the fork was held on the shaft by a roll pin - replaced it with normal tools by hand - maybe held the fork in a vise while replacing the pin. As always, prompt cheerful refund if info is bogus. Take care, Dick B

thanks for the info- I will look into this. A couple of times I've had the shifter get messed up- had to pull the cover off to re-align the selectors. I will wait until the weather is better, and take a close look at this. It would be way cool if it works.
Any other ideas are welcome.

If I remember right there are three shift rods in the tranny - one for 1-2, one for 3-4 and the one for reverse. There are ball detents so if any rod is moved away from its neutral poisition, the other two are prevented from moving. If the drive lug on the reverse rod is broken, the shifter doesn't engage it. I always shifted into reverse with a little too much gusto - and the lug finally just broke. If yours is broken there is a chance something could drop into the gears and do more damage. Maybe better to not run it until you have a chance to look in there. I don't have my manual for the small L's anymore - maybe somebody else can post some diagrams.

If you need a parts manual PM or email me and I'll email it to you. This one does run when you need it to. :)
