Guys,
I'm new to tractors, anything larger than lawn tractors that is. I recently bought an old Kubota L225. The cosmetics are fair, and the engine runs great. I noticed some new bolts (red flag) in the shifter cover. Sure enough, before I even got a chance to plow with it, it hangs up. It seems it has hung between gears, when coming out of reverse. Letting out on the clutch will kill the engine. I have tried rocking it with the rear wheels, but cannot free it up. Any ideas before I tear into the shifter? I have an IT manual and have looked it over. I just hoped for some words of wisdom before I tackle it.

Thanks,

It sounds like a problem I had years ago with a L345 (similar trans) - one of the shifter forks in the transmission was broken, allowing it to remain in one gear while being shifted into another. Once it was in two gears it was locked up tight. If you take off the gear selector cover, you'll be able to see how to slide all the shifters into their middle position so it's in neutral. It should be visible which fork needs repair or replacement so the shift lever engages it right.

Thanks for the reply. That was what I was hoping to hear. I'm not about to "split the tractor" right now, and I did want to get my garden broke soon.

Thanks for the help. I took the shifter plate off, scooted everything to nuetral, and turned a garden spot! I have not gardened in 20 yrs, due to back and neck problems. I'm retired now and hopefully can do it just a little while at a time with the little tractor. It sure is easier than the walk behind David Bradley's I used back then!

You may be able to fix it without splitting the tractor. As I remember the job I put in the new parts through the top cover. Can you see what's wrong in there? You mentioned there were new bolts, indicating it has been worked on. It's possible one of the detent balls was left out (or dropped to the bottom). If the balls are all in their passages between the rods, they prevent more than one shift rod moving out of neutral at a time.

I didn't see anything missing, or broken. I just figured it was something like the old pick-up trucks of the 50s, that would get crossed up from time to time. It worked fine after I seperated the sliders and re-installed the shifter. I think when operating it, one will have to always be sure nuetral has been established by shaking the shifter back and forth before going into another gear. ??? I broke a 40x50 ft spot with it. I will break another spot soon. I intend to dump grass clippings/leaves etc. on one, keeping it cut in with a disc all year, and rotate the planting from one spot to the other from year to year. I'll have to buy a cultivator, and a disc now.
