Kubota/L2250/FEL,6' Finish Mower, 5' Bush hog
I recently pickup up a L2250 4WD, with FEL, 6' finish mower and 5' bush hog. I have some questions for anyone familiar with this tractor....
1. Where do you add oil? The manual says there should be a cap under the alternator, but, unless I have to drill it out, there isn't one there. Looked on top of the head and didn't see one there either.
2. Is the 2250 supposed to have a 2 stage clutch? This is the gear transmission shuttle shift version. When I release the clutch, the transmission and the PTO engage at the same time. I thought the PTO was supposed to engage first then the tranny... Which leads to a couple of related questions
2.1 If it's got a 2 stage clutch, does it hurt anything to use it like it is, or do I risk damaging something if I don't replace the clutch?
2.2 If the clutch needs to be replaced for it to work properly, how hard is this to do, and/or approx how much would it cost to have it done?

Thanks in advance

Jim

Jim - I personally can not answer even 1 of your questions, and maybe none of the regular users here will be able to either (we all have newer machines I think), so I am suggesting maybe to try the "other brands" section at Yesterdays Tractors online magazine, at http://www.ytmag.com
good luck, some guys are now starting to collect older compacts just like people have been collecting and restoring older farm tractors for years, and maybe you can find somebody who knows. Have you tried your local dealer too?

Maybe the dealer can order you an owners manual. The Kubota Owners Manual, Parts Manual, and Shop Manuals that I have seen are really first class and leave nothing to your imagination. The oil fill on most diesels is within 12 inches of the oil dip stick and usually is set up to go directly in the oil pan. It may not look like an oil cap, but it comes out. I had one made of rubber that had a bolt head in the top that you could squeeze the rubber down so it would not fall out (it was under the alternator and not very convenient). The dip stick fell out instead.

How do you disengage the PTO? This will tell you whether it has a single stage or two stage clutch. It sounds like it has only one clutch and that controls the tractor and PTO if the PTO is engaged. Does the PTO run at full speed when the tractor is in Neutral or does the tractor have to be moving for the PTO to spin?

I never saw a tractor that putting a clutch in was much fun. The clutch is pretty cheap, but it takes a full day to put one in if you have to do it yourself and normally requires stands under both ends of the tractor and splitting the tractor just in front of the transmission. My dad is 84 and he just put a clutch in his John Deere in his garage! If you are much older than that, I believe I would take it to the dealer if it really needs one /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Wen,
I have an owners manual, but there doesn't appear to be any place to add oil in the location the OM indicates for the 2250 (right under the alternator) I've also ordered a shop manual. The PTO is disengaged with a lever under the steering wheel (actually near the base). The owners manual leads me to believe that the type of engagement setup I have only comes with a dual clutch. The PTO can be engaged when the tractor is in neutral, and does not spin if disengaged when the tractor is moving. I'm hoping that I won't have to replace the clutch, but if using it the way it is presently is damaging the tractor that may be the best option. It is certainly usable the way it is, but if it's not "right" I'd like to know. Apreciate your information.

I think I can answer some of your question.
1 My L2550 has a tube that stick above the motor that you can add oil to the motor. I'm not sure if yours would be the same. From what I can see in the owners manual the filler is under the alternator.Might be different on different year tractors.
2 If your pto lever moves from side to side it is a single clutch. If it moves up and down it is a dual clutch. This lever is right under the steering wheel. I do believe that they built these tractors with both types of clutches.
3 Not sure if you will damage anything running it with only one clutch working.
4 I have never replaced a clucth on one of these tractors. I have done plenty in cars and trucks....not a fun job but it can be done.
5 Even though this is an older tractor it is an excellent machine. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks all for your help. The oil filler is indeed on top of the cylinder head, via a black tube that twists out for easy access. My better half pointed this out when I was out making yet another search for the obvious... Don't know why the stinking manual says its under the alternator.

AS far as the clutch goes, the PTO engagement lever on this one moves vertically, so according to you (and the owners manual... You know there's more than just safety stuff in the safety section of that thing) I have the dual clutch variety. Unfortunately, it ain't acting like a dual clutch at the moment, so I can only assume that the at least part of the clutch needs to be replaced. Went to the dealer and got a $950 quote for just parts to replace the whole clutch assembly, but probably wouldn't need all of that, just pressure plates and disks. At any rate, I guess I can't hurt the clutch any more at this point so I'll probably keep using it like this for a while.

Thanks for the information
