Hi All,
I recently purchased an L245DT, I have gone though and changed all the fluids and have had some time to use it a bit. A few questions have come to mind.

1) Sometimes, when in low range, I'll go to shift between reverse and a forward gear but when I go to let the clutch out it feels like the brake is stuck, the tractor doesnt move, but you can hear the load increase on the motor as the clutch comes out. But all I need to to do to fix it is shift in and out of neutral or into another gear, sometimes it takes a couple of tries but I can always get it to work. Any ideas at what might be going on here?

2)When I changed the fluid in the gear boxes of the front axle there seemed to be quite a bit of metalic particals in the fluid. Eveything about the 4 wheel drive seems to work alright, should I be concerned?

3) This is my first tractor, so i'm not sure it this is normal, but the brakes seem to have a fine line between slowing down the wheels and locking them up, there is also sometimes a squawk when they lock up, normal? Do these tractors have 'wet' brakes?
thanks in advance,
I appreciate it!

(1) Sounds like the shifter is allowing the trans to be in 2 gears at once (not good) there may be a missing detent ball from someone taking it apart before - search TBN for L245 - there have been other discussions about the shifter.

(2) metal chips in the oil (also not good) come from worn/broken bearings or gear teeth. Not much to do but drain out & change the oil. May become more serious with time.

(3) Again, sounds like advanced wear - brake lining material may be gone in places allowing metal-to metal contact. L225's were dry, not sure about L245's.

Thanks for the response!

Two gears at once, yikes! I did some searching and found a similar story about an L225, in a thread about a great rebuild. It sounds like he never fixed the problem even after replacing the detent balls.
Can I just un bolt and lift off the shifter plate and lever? Are there pieces that could fall off into the transmision case? I'd like to pull it and inpect if its not to complicated.

As far as metal in the front end oil, there was more then i'd like to see. but it wasnt really chips, more like dust. The other side had a bearing failure and was since replaced, so that fluid was clean, I wonder if some of the debres from that could have made its way to the other wheels gears.

How bad is it to replace the brakes in these things, any ideas?

thanks again for the help!
