I'm thinking of aquiring a l245dt from a friend of mine that has a problem- it will turn left just fine, but when you try to turn the steering wheel right the wheel and shaft spin up and out of the column! I'm guessing that something in the gear is RF'ed, obviously, but not sure what it is. From my research on here it seems that parts are hard to get and expensive, so my question is: is this just a broken pin somewhere, or will I need a whole new steering gear? And if I do, what chance do I have of finding one? Thanks for any advice- Scott. PS it is an early 80's model with manual steering.

Update- I went and looked at the tractor this morning and it is actually a l295dt, not a 245. I turned the steering wheel and it wont move the tires when turned counterclockwise and lifts out of the column when turned clockwise:confused: Any ideas on what I might need to fix? Thanks- Scott

well, after doing some more research it seems I will need a steering box rebuild or a used unit. Anyone have any leads or advice on where to obtain parts for this? - Scott

I believe all Kubota's are hydrostat steering and probably expensive to fix and not home fixable.

It has manual steering (unfortunately)

Scott,

Seems you have found your solution on the other site OTT - I frequented that site too since I had a L185DT and needed parts etc.. The older stuff is a little bit more dear but maybe its an easy fix.

It sounds like either the nut came off the bottom if your lucky and not a sheared/broken shaft.

Good luck with this - the nice thing is they are simple older tractors and pretty easy to R&R just about anything.

Carl- thanks for the reply. I discovered the other site after searching because I didn't get any response here. I joined this site when I got my Kioti LB2204 and had some questions about it. I guess when you are a newbie you get less attention.;)

I dont think its the newbie factor probably more due to the low number of these older machines and rarity of the repair/issue.

I know I am getting on this thread late but maybe I can supply the little information I have. Our L245 2WD has a similar problem except it would only turn right and the steering shaft would spin upwards and out, then stop if turned left. I disassembled the box and found the upper thrust bearing was in pieces due to water contamination and subsequent bearing failure. The failure of the lower thrust bearing would cause the problem you have, which is opposite mine. I am currently rebuilding the steering box, trying to see how cheap I can do a reasonably good job that will last. An aftermarket gearbox can cost almost $500. This is a great tractor, by the way! If anyone out there is noticing a looseness in the steering shaft or box it needs to be addressed. The assembly is a reasonably simple arrangement but it is very important that it does not get water in it. Check the weep hole at the bottom of the steering column to see if it is open so water can drain out but in my case the seal above the top thrust bearing failed, allowing water to get into the steering box.
