DH1101-B Engine will start when pulled off. Starter turns engine very well butt will not start tractor. In checking engine compression it appears that cylinders 2 and 3 are close to 200 psi but cylinder 1 is much lower below 100 psi. I recently found that the air filter had a hole in it about the size of a quarter. I am assuming the low compression in cylinder one is the problem. The glow plugs are working fine. Once cranked the engine runs well. Any recommendations? Is this a cylinder problem or could it be a head problem? Thanks.

IT could be a valve adjustment or fit problem which a fit problem would mean a need to remove the head. It could be a poor seal on the cylinder which would mean a total engine tear down.
I'd grap some oil and put it in the cylinder and check the cylinder compression again, if you have a gain then your leak is by the rings.

I would expect the cylinder compression to be higher close to 500 / 550 lbs.
a couple of months ago had a simular type problem and found the top ring busted on pistons with other unexplained problems. after replacing the rings and bearing, gaskets the engine runs properly. How many hours on engine.
and there is possibility of starting fluid cracking rings.
Should your compression had been proper would of suggested starter not running fast enough.
What else have you checked before compression?

Ken's right. 200 psi is the range for a gas engine. 450-550 is the range for a diesel. That 18:1 compression is the difference.

My guess is that your fear is correct. You sucked in a bunch of dirt and grit and wore out the engine. sorry.

Doesn't sound good to me either. The dirt probably damaged the rings and cylinder walls and that's where your compression is going. I would expect the compression to be well over 400 PSI.

I appreciate everyone's help on this. I am sure that the problem is that the engine has been damaged by the flow of dirt into it. The engine has just over 2000 hours on it. Would it be feasible to replace the liners, pistons and rings and rod bearings without going any further or would this not be advisable? I believe I could do this with the engine in place without too much trouble.
