i had a dead battery, i charged it and tested the alternator. The alternator is only putting out 11 volts. After chargeing the battery, the tractor ran approx 40 minutes and slowly died. It sounded almost like it ran out of fuel. I cleaned the bulb and fuel filter and reinstalled but the tractor would'nt start. I then charged the battery overnight and put it back in. The tractor started and ran , but seemed weak, like it wanted to stall out. It again ran for 1/2 hr before i shut it down. Does this model need a full battery charge to keep it running ? Does this sound like a fuel problem ? Any suggestions appreciated.....

No, the L2550 has no electrical solenoid to cut off the fuel, like newer
tractors. So once the tractor is started, the only way to shut it down is
to cut off the fuel with the kill lever, or to stall it. You have a fuel problem,
IMO. Can you see water in your filter bowl?

I once ran my L2550 for a week with no electrical system when my starter
switch failed and my new one was on order.

just had similiar problem with a dead cell in an Optima Red battery, tested good at dealer under load but sitting for a couple days, it would slowly discharge. Replaced it even though dealer said it was okay. [wouldn't honor warrenty-autozone] No further probs as of yet with the new I bought at a different vendor.

I have a different battery i'm gonna try this weekend. Someone also mentioned that when i pulled the fuel filter and cleaned the bulb, i might have gotten air in the fuel lines. Seems i have two seperate problems. Electrical & fuel. Any other idea's or things to check ?

If your starter switch is bad, as mine was, you are probably not energizing
the alternator when the engine is running. So each time you start the
tractor, you use up some of the battery's charge until it is run down. Lead
acid batteries don't like full discharge, especially when left that way.

If you opened up the filter bowl, you did get some air in there, but if you
got the engine started, it often works its way out. There IS an air bleed
procedure....you might see the nut on the FI pump that is used for that
purpose.
