L2550 Won\'t Turn Off w/key . . .

Suddenly my L2550 no longer turns off w/the key. (I can still stop the engine by pulling the "Emergency Stop" control though). There is also no "click" when the key is turned to "on" prior to starting also. This tractor is now 18yrs old.

I have checked fuses and wiring but found nothing. I suspect the relay because there is no voltage at the solenoid and tapping the relay did cause it to "click" a couple of times when I left the key in the "on" position and the engine off.

Anyone had this happen or have any ideas?

Sounds like you just found it with the relay. If you had voltage at the solonoid after caressing the relay then yup sounds like a relay.
Relays do go bad and I think you got your moneys worth for 18yrs of service.

Unfortunately, it wasn't as simple as I thought . . .

After replacing the relay, it was still intermittent. Turns out the shaking I was doing was allowing a bad connector in the wiring harness down beside the fuel tank on the left side to contact. The RED wire in that harness has a deteriorated connector so I am now faced with either replacing the harness ($$$ I'm sure) or adding a jumper wire that would run outside the harness.

If I could find a replacement connector to go in the harness, I would be all set but I am not having much luck. It is a male spade type connector with a hole part way up the body that mates with a clip in the harness plug that keeps it from moving when the 2 halves of the harness are connected.

I think you can get yourself out of this one without too much sweat. I wouldn't bother with a new wiring harness, and this comes from a recovering perfectionist.

As long as you have enough wire to work with, it sounds as if you can just replace both connectors with a new male and female of whatever style you can obtain. Maybe a "bullet" style where the two halves click together and fairly well protected in their own rubbery-plastic sleeve. I know soldered connections are considered best, but this type of crimp connector has always served my pretty well. If you don't have enough wire to work with, maybe add a little more of the same gauge with a butt connector.

I know it might seem a little unnerving to cut into your 'bota's wiring, but cut away. No need to be married to the connectors that are there now.

I know it's been a long time but maybe you can remember where you found the "timer relay" for the engine key switch shut-off system. I checked the fuel cutoff solinoid by applying 12 volts to it. I also checked the wire all the way up to the dash connector but lost it there. Any help on locating the relay?

I just had all the parts to the wiring harness off today. I can surely tell you they are pricey around 1500 dollars. The timer relay is mounted directly above the engine close to the diesel tank.
